HALL SENDER

I have searched the forum and there seems to be loads of info about these sensors. Does anyone know how these work. my GTI is showing 00515 hall sensor signal outside tolarance. Does this need changing as someone  said you can unplug them once the car has started. is this sensor conected to the crankshaft sensor and should i change this first. Money running out

The hall sensor is located on the side of the distributor. The first thing I would do is check that your timing is correct, if it is then you may need a new hall sensor  :smiley:

Also can you rev beyond 5000rpm or is it limited?

After reading about the 5000rpm problem i decided on the way home tonight to try it. as soon as i got 5000rpm bingo the car shut down. I have cleared all the codes down but have not had time to recheck them. might try timming before i spend any mre money though.

also check the wiring for the sensor as it can crack with age causing the same issue and a new sensor wont fix it!!

Also if you do end up replacing the sensor, don't do what I did and foget to plug it back in  :rolleyes:

I drove around for 2 weeks thinking that the problem wasn't solved until I realised my mistake  :lipsrsealed: :laugh:

Bellend - If you don't have a crank sensor then it would die as it doesn't have another reference point for the ECU as to where TDC is. My Mk2 did this, whole broke off when I shut the bonnet  :sad:

OP, glad ure nearly there :) +1 to Dom's advice to get the static timing checked first, hopefully its just one tooth out. If the belt isn't new and has slipped I'd be changing it with a new tensioner
