ARGHHHH!!!! VAGCOM reading Error? mk3 gti

 What am i doing wrong plugged in the vagcom OBDII and it started to read and came up with error!!!!

what error was it? was the ignition switched on, and did the led in the vag-com cable light up

 It is a mac code reader OBDII. When i plugged it in it had a menu come up on the screen, and then i selected find fault codes then it started but then came up with Errr? the engine was,nt running and i tried it with ignition on and off.
  I have got a mk3 95 colour concept i have had no problems with it till friday last week, it was firing on 3 cylinders and then on saturday it suddenly won't start?
   I have got sparks at the plugs and fuel going through the lines so i was hoping it,s an electical
fault?
