Keeping your MK5?
« on: 03 January 2011, 09:09 »
I'm trying to gauge how long to keep my Mk6 for and therefore wondering how long everyone has kept or intending to keep their mk5's GTi's for?

Is it best to sell after 3 years or 4 years. I do about 15k a year.

What's the difference in resale on a 3 year old Mk5 say with 4OK miles and a 4 year old with say 60K.

Thanks M

had my mk4 turbo for 10 years from  new, only  covered 70k. Plan to keep the ed30 for a similar period of time provided of course it remains  in  good nic.

I've had my mk5 GTi for 3.5 years now (it's 4 years old). I normally only keep cars for 2 to 3 years and the golf is now the car I've owned the longest, which has surprised me.

I'm planning to keep it for another 18 months so it'll be 6 years old and I would guess milage will be 75k to 80k miles but may well keeping for longer.

Thanks. Its nice to know other peoples views regarding this. I think I swap and change my cars to quickly tbo. I kept my previous car a mk5 GT for just under 3 years. As soon as it was fully paid for I traded it for the mk6 gti. All very well and nice to get a new car but continaully paying finance is not such a good thing.  :undecided:

My mk5 was a great car by the way and never caused me any problems mechanically. Just a vw service every year and that was it

Totally agree with you there!

I was fortunate enough to be able to pay cash for the golf when I bought it and not having had finace on it has been a nice feeling. I actually think that's contributed to me keeping it so long as what I wanted to change it for would mean between £5k and £10k worth of finace which I don't want to do!

In hindsight it would have made good sense to have traded my Mk5 GT for a new as possible \ low millage ED30. I think when I've kept my mk6 3-4 years I'll maybe just opt for a another mk6 as opposed to a mk7.

I usually change my car every year and the MKV Edition 30 I ended up keeping for 3.5 yrs. I now have a new Lexus IS-F sport, but will be trading it in for an RS3 soon

Mine is just over 4 years old and is now the longest I've owned a car. Having just done over 31 thousand miles I'm not looking to get out for mileage reasons and although I get the odd pang as we all do and then spend some time scouring the web for suitable replacements I never seem to come up with anything that's making a compelling reason for putting my hand in my pocket and changing.

So for now at least I'm staying put and although I'd like to upgrade the stereo to an RCD510 I read so many things on here about battery drain that I suspect I won't bother although if I was less inept with a set of spanners I might have had a different opinion.

My initial ownership experience of the GTi was far from positive but when it comes To changing it I can't find anything i want to spend money on to replace it as it's such a good all rounder.  Cayman s Gen II is next car on the list form me.
