Help Please - Engine cut out

Please can anyone help......

My Golf Mk3 Gti 8v 1994 started up fine today, first turn of the key, i drove the car approximately 500 yards until i went over a small speed bump, the car coughed a little and i thought it was just my poor clutch control but it died. It now turns over fine but will not start. Roadside recovery has looked at it and failed to get it to start, sadly it now arrived home on the back of a recovery truck.

Dodgy coil or moisture in the distributor cap. Remove the cap (make note of what HT leads go where) and dry it throughout with paper towel. Refit, spray WD40 all over it, and inside the pins where the HT leads connect to, spray the HT leads themselves (inside) and refit.  Try that, if it fails then start looking at coilpack (they are very commmon to go in these engines) or maybe something more serious like a bad sensor somewhere.

Thanks i'll give it a go in the morning. I notice on several other threads people talking about the crankshaft sensor, is this the one you are pointing towards if your other advise doesn't work.

Yup. It's not too much of a pain to change. However for very easy access I removed the front end of the car and the front engine mount and bracket.

May I add that getting the car scanned with vagcom will point out any sensor faults, so before spending money on sensor that may not be faulty, have the car scanned/buy a cheap vagcom lead off ebay (£10) and scan it.

if roadside recovery couldn't get it to start (assume thats AA / etc) would suggest crank or cam sensors personally.  I think they'd manage a lack-of-spark issue.

no it doesn't always.  mine was faulty (wire convering burnt away) but still "in tollerance" so no faults logged.  Also will cost the OP ££ depending if he is going to a garage.

Crank would be my bet.

I think before spending £60 on a crank sensor it's worth checking over a few other bits.
