sound upgrade on a mk3
« on: 18 December 2010, 17:48 »
Hi,
excuse my english, its not my mother tongue. I have a 5 door golf mk3, I need advice on upgrading my sound system. And to mention that I want to keep it rather stealth, so no big subwoofer boxes in the boot just wont do. Since the stock audio system has no bass at all, Im looking to fix that problem. Currently Im thinking of 3 ways: 1) Use the spare wheel well as a subwoofer box  2) Build a box for a subwoofer on one side of the boot, partially on the wheel arch. 3) No subwoofer at all, use the doors as a enclosure and add some component speakers that can play quite low frequencyes.

Could you comment on these three different ways, Which idea would be the simplest and which idea would give me the best result. I know that the stealth subwoofer box on the boot side is rather common, but on a mk3, I couldnt then even change my rear light bulbs :D ? And using the door as a enclosure, I think that theres rather lot to cover up, to archive a closure, in addition to, originally, the door speakers are fitted to the door padding, I would also need to change that? Would the spare wheel well even be big enough for a subwoofer?

Replace the door speakers first and use a 4 channel amp on them.
Try that and see if you like it and if you need some more base then do the wheel arch sub.
Yes the spare wheel weel is big enough for a sub, but if you still want to use the boot you will have to put a very strong cage over it.

thnx, i have an amp with an output of 4x45w RMS,i think thats enough. I was thinking of raplacing the stock front speakers with these.Any comments on those? Should i also replace the rear door speakers? i hava a pair of coaxial speakers, maybe raplacing the rears with these?
I am going to deaden all the doors, that should also improve the sound quality. Any more suggestions what to do when replacing the door speakers, since im going to strip the doors apart anyway. Can anyone comment on this: http://www.showyoursound.nl/Public/Showcase/Showcase.asp?Id=75&Page=3 Basically covering up the door more to use the door space as a enclosure for the speakers and mounting the speakers to the door, rather than to the door panels like they are mounted originally. Would this be worth doing?

Clarion are not bad, but I would look at JBL or Infinity's

Yes sound deadening in the doors is good, trying to seal it completely is difficult.
Yes a secure fixing to the door metal would be a good idea. Be interested to see how you do it!
