Looking through that aperture in the last picture I can see that the vanes on the water pump are missing/broken so a new water pump is now on order.
This cooling system has really been through the mill.....I will be lucky if the head and gasket are OK :undecided:

Water pump order now cancelled. Having read on other forums about the quality of ECP water pumps have decided to order OEM from VAG, same price and might just last more than 3 months. Anyone here had the same problem with ECP water pumps? There appear to be two available, around £10 difference in price so I'm guessing the OEM one is the more expensive but cheaper from VAG?

Hey Rich,  nice to see you getting stuck into this so quickly... Must get back on to mine now Christmas has past and the freeze appears to have left us.....

Blimey that does look a bit rough... What's been used to try and seal it on the old pipework? Looks like lard!

Is there any damage to the block or is that just crud we can see in your pics.

Keep at it mate, shouldn't be long before you'll be grunting up and down the carriageways.

I did get a bad water pump for the Audi 100 from ECP once.
I couldn't say if i was just unlucky though, most bits from them have been pretty good.
