Weird knocking
« on: 10 December 2010, 14:04 »
As described above, my mk2 makes a weird knocking when accelerating hard and coming off the throttle hard. Any ideas?

Cheers

Where abouts is the noise coming from, front, rear, under the bonnet? Can you be more descriptive, is it a dull thud or more metallic and clinky? Of course all the se questions mean i have no idea! What engine do you have (not that it makes much difference)?

Knocking at the front could be a few things. Make sure the suspension strut bolts are tight, all 4 ball joint bolts, wheel nuts and hub nut.

Track rod ends
When you hear a knock when wiggling the steering wheel when stationary. If the car is jacked up, its not as obvious to find.

Wheel bearing
Turn a corner at speed (40 mph), if you are turning left and you hear a noise - its the right wheel bearing, turning right and its your left wheel bearing.

Jack the car up, grab it left and right and wiggle it and check for play. If there's play and a noise as above, odds are its a wheel bearing.

Ball Joint
Grab the wheel top and bottom and wiggle, have a friend with a torch look at the ball joint when wiggling and the play is pretty obvious.

CV Joint
Knocking/grinding at low speeds

Top Mounts
No idea, I guess I'd find out by process of elimination from the above?

I had the same, ended up with the big end sh!tting itself   do yourself a favour this weekend and do an oil change but take off the sump and check for little bits of metal. If there are any stop driving and if you know what your doing get stripping or if not get her to a garage. If there aren't it has only cost you £25 max in oil and a bit of your time where if your big end fails its new engine time  :undecided:

It feels like its more suspension/drive shaft (cvs etc) to me. I am changing wishbones, ball joints and track rod ends this weekend anyway, that will narrow it down.

Cheers Guys
