I've got fat cables (4 AWG) and get just under 14v as well, all pretty normal

The voltage drop off when the blowers/lights are on, isn't too good though (although, I'd have to test first hand to be sure).

I've just bought a new voltage regulator from GSF so I will see if it makes a difference.

I will be putting it on tomorrow. £9.50 + vat from GSF. Its the Bosch one.

check across the battery terminals, or from the chunky 13mm nut on the alternator to the battery -ve

the earth on the head wont effect these values, its the battery, starter and alternator cabling which is what wants cleaning up and/or upgrading. mk3 golf will supply +ve cables that fit which are nice n chunky, -ve doesnt reach the earth terminal behind the battery but you could make up a nice chunky extension strap to fix this. Some B4 Passat models have a set of battery cables which are a direct fit onto a MK2 though, and are the chunky MK3 design.

you will see voltage dropping as you turn on all the lights, blower etc this is normal.  can check mine later if you like to give you piece of mind

You have 14.3V @ alternator job sorted as stated by Jonny voltage drop as you turn things on is normal and the parameters show consistant drain as you apply new loads. Looks like jobbie done to me, but defo upgrade the battery terminals and alternator ones to chunk funk ones it will help the old gal!
That earth strap from the coil will make no difference to the alternator to battery power at all!
Did you double the earth from the battery to gear box bolt?
