Is the touch screen radio worth an extra £380?
« on: 07 December 2010, 19:30 »
The thing is, I only ever listen to the radio when in the car.

Is there any other reason to have the touch screen?

This is the spec - 5 dr, silver, DSG, ACC, DAB, parking pack, service pack, luxury pack, cruise control, bluetooth, flat tyre indicator, mud flaps, Xenons.

Have I missed anything important?

Apart from the fact that the blue illumintion on the rcd 310 doesn't match anthing else in the cabin and the addition of a 6 disc changer, it does add an element of luxury. Imo it is definately worth the extra, oh and it's really easy to find tracks, albums etc.
With you having blutooth it would be rude not to tbh, have a search on here for vw bluetooth and you'll see what i mean.
Plus if your having the parking pack then the animation on the screen is excellent!

The RCD 310 is quite an ugly duckling but has the best sound quality. Brilliant on radio. No doubt.
If you are taking the plunge why not simply upgrade to the RNS 510. RCD 510 and RNS 510  are similar sounding and not as good as the RCD 310.
I know, as I have compared them in my car.
However, having the touchsreen radio/sat nav does lift the quality and look of the interior.
So go for it.

Is the sound quality drop really that noticeable going from the 310 to RNS?

Just buy one off ebay, I just got a virtually new RCD510 out of a 2010 Scirroco for £250 and I could still sell the 310 if I wanted to get back another £50-£100 depending. I'm keeping the 310 to refit when I sell the car though.

It sure is. Quite a difference IMO.
Put it this way, the touchscreens sound a bit stangulated compared to the RCD 310. Sad but true.
But 'looking' at the horror that was the RCD 310 was too much for me to contend with.
I listened to three RNS 510s before I chose mine.  Darren is the one to get the RNS from. No doubt as you'll get top notch service.
Had to fit a sub whoofter to my RNS to sort the bass out. It sounds 'ok' now.

Gossa has a point. Keep the RCD 310 to fit back when you sell the car. Then flog the RCD/RNS510 on ebay.

If i was buying again i would go for the RCD510 with the rear view camera option as the GTI can be a pain to park and its always nice to actually see whats behind you as parking sensors don't see empty wheelie bins :embarassed:

Rear camera. For all it costs it is worth every penny. However you need the RCD510 or RNS510 if you have the camera. Unfortunately they wouldn't fit the camera without one of them installed.

Its worth paying for the look of the cabin alone.  It makes the car look much more modern, and is much easier to navigate through an iPod or memory stick full of music.

If you didn't have DAB, I would have also suggested the rear view camera as its one of the best options I've chosen!!

£380 for a factory fit RCD510 or £500-600 for a retrofit RNS510.  I'd take the RNS purely for the built in Hard Drive - but again, you can't have DAB with that.
