Golf Mk2 to Mk4 rear caliper conversion

hi,
ive a 1990 mk2 16valve, if i were to replace the rear calipers for mk4 ones, what version handbrake cable should i be using? ive been told by some i need pre 88 cables while others say to use existing, what are the differences between the two, and which one should i be using?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is no point at all mate, the front does all the work. Unless you just wanna do handbrake turns

your probably right my one has mk4 rears apparently and in these low temps they still got stuck in the morning lol had to wiggle the wires

i had 90 spec gti and used the standard cables fine, my rears/handbrake was sh!t. worth while if your keeping it, in my humble opinion of course.

All Mk2 Owners will have to look at doing some sort of conversion in the coming years as VW has discontinued the Rear Calipers...

You can buy the carriers (Fecking Dear Thoo) but not the calipers as I found out a few months ago when I wanted new ones....

You can use the existing cables and carriers on a 90' spec Golf, but the Mk4 caliper uses a 'banjo' type fitting for the brake pipe.  I got my conversion pipes from C&R Enterprises which are made by Goodridge, and they were only £20 or so.

Thats right, there is no point in swapping out a crap set of calipers for a good set. And after all you don't need rear brakes for an MOT.

@tech1889/Lewy : thankyou for the info, you're right, my mk2 calipers are starting to stick, and notice at times when slowly rolling to a stop - theres a slight noise.... ive got new discs and pads on less than a year old and one of the discs i noticed scoring marks probably because the calipers not releasing freely. at the time when discs/pads got changed, when winding the pistons back, was a lot of resistance, and had to use spanner end for extra leverage, surely rear calipers are on their way out??
and finally, you're right Lewy - mot is in january, gota get it fixed asap, my car is my pride and joy so why should i be interested in doing handbrake turns (as some member suggested) - jus wana pass the mot.
