When you say 'taken the oil cap off and it stinks of fuel' .. do you have fuel in your oil? Could be more serious than a simple tune up

There's also the chance of bad timing causing the above.

Well adjusting the mixture, if I put the accelerator cable on maxium travel the car runs fine but the auxilery air valve keeps opening, so I moved the clip to a couple of notches down now the car revs at about 1500 on idle, my fix was to turn the screw anti clockwise until it idles at about 900, although this seems to be a normal sort of operating condition and the auxilery air valve isnt constantly cutting in, the fuel is still dissapearing, I think the problem is greater than just overfueling, and to top it off my fuel guage has stoped again (not stuck like before) could this be part of the problem, If I unplug the fuel pressure regualator what affect would it have and could this also be part of the problem, iv also noticed that one of my injectors is loose if I push it whilst the car is running it revs higher let go and the revs drop not by much perhaps 200 or so, would it be best to put the accelerator cable tight and drop the fuel mixture or loosen the accelerator and increase the fuel mixture, thanks for your help thus far.

Congratulations. You now know more about k-jet than your average mechanic. I took mine to the local VW specialist and even they weren't interested.

If you have loose injectors then replace the injector seals as this wll be throwing the mixture off too

does yours start ok? without pressing on the gas pedal whilst turning the ign key?

I had a problem on mine where the meter head needle was sticking, so it was squirting fuel into the cyliners when the engine was switched off ( strong fuel smell when you remove the oil filler cap) i carefully pulled the needle out and cleaned it, no probs since

yer starts fine and idles fine, think my first step should be to replace the injector seals, iron out the problems 1 by 1.
