Plenty of problems
« on: 28 November 2010, 18:01 »
Just bought myself a mk4 golf gti turbo. Paid peanuts for it but that came at a price. So the two main things I need to fix first are

1. The heater. The blower works fine but there is no heat. Don't think it's an airlock because the engine is running at 90 degs which is normal. Any ideas? Living in the Western Isles a heater is a must right now :(

2. The reversing light switch. I'm sure its the switch because i've changed the bulbs. Is this an easy job?

Any help or advice is appreciated :)

1) does the temp sit bang on 90 or just below when driving at 50?

I'd say thermostat or waterpump

Well the heater looks like its the matrix now that i've had a bit of time to look at it. So not sure what to do there. Tried Barrs flush. Doesn't seem to be doing much. Anyone know how to remove it? I assume its a dash out job?

The reversing lights was a corroded connection from the switch on the gearbox. Easy fix :D

Upon further reading of other peoples problems i think it might be the water pump. Don't know why i don't pay attention in the first place.  Going to do a couple more checks tomorrow with my trusty garden hose. Need to drain the coolent anyway after putting the flush stuff in it.

I also had this problem once just last week, (heaters) I have a 1.4 though mate. It was really icey/frosty and this has never happened before or again since but one morning travelling to work i drove roughly 5 miles if that, heating was at 90degrees normal and no heat comming out mate. Thought it was maybe down to being about -10, -15 degress throughout the night and early morning. Not sure though... Like i said it hasnt happened again. Can anyone shed some light on this?

(Sorry if this is hi-jacking ur thread)

Have you checked that your coolant strength is good enough for -15?? Testers are dirt cheap - or just pop to your local garage - failing that air-loc?
