urgent help on gti 8v
« on: 17 November 2010, 22:17 »
hi,

was coming of a roundabout yesterday and all of a sudden the steering stiffened up and i was unable to turn the car and the engine cut out with the oil light flashing.  Today it happened twice when turning a tight corner and if there had been an oncoming car i would have hit it.  I restart the car and On my way homei took a corner and the steering stiffened up for about 2 secs but no engine cut out.

All happend when it was raining so am scared at it happening again and very dangerous.

Any ideas?

thanks

Try cleaning your throttle body?

Faulty ignition switch ??  This could explain why it happens as you are turning. Have you tried a Vag Com scan ??

The loss of steering when the engine cut is obviously down to the engine not turning the P/S pump. As for why the engine cut, it looks like you've got people who probably know more than me on the case already. What I do have some prior experience of is P/S cutting in the wet with motor still running happily. What state is your P/S belt in? Is it reasonably well tensioned up (don't go too mad or you'll mash the pump bearings)? Also, do you still have the splash guard around the belt to protect it from getting wet?

The cutting out won't be PAS related. Especially if oil light is flashing (although it flashes if the engine stalls).

I'd plug it into vagcom and see if any electrical gremlings are in the engine.

clean your throttle body mate. Are you sure you just didnt let off the clutch and it jumped itself? If i was you id clean your throttle body and replace the power steering belt mate.
