Having major drama with my Mk3 1992 golf gti (Newbie)
« on: 14 November 2010, 18:14 »
I have done the following:
1. Changed the airflow meter.
2. Cleaned the TB
3. Changed the fuel
4. Put jet cleaner in the fuel

Also i have tried, a 1998 ecu but the car turned over but did not fire up?

and has anyone a clear picture of where the crank sensor is located? pic's are better than words..

please also could someone tell me where the data link cable is located.. I'm at my wits end with this car,

Kind Regards

Casey

A 1998 ECU will not work as it will need to be coded with the key.
1992 should have a 2x2 port, still next to the ashtray i think??
Have you tried VAG com?

92 will be a 2E code, which doesnt have a crank sensor. on the early cars vag-com port is behind one of the dash blanks and is 2x2 as above. can get adaptors cheap off ebay. if you look can get vag-com cable with adaptor included also :)

so what exactly is happening? have you checked you get a spark? does fuel pump prime?

I thankyou very much have found the data link ports..

the car starts and the rev sit at about 900-1000 but when you apply rev's the car's rev's go up aand down between 2500 - 200 and keeps going untill it cuts out...

if I drive the car at high speed its fine and performs really well, but when I pull up at a junction it stalls,

I have now changed the 167 relay and the 30 relay. but no change, have cleaned the Tb, now you say there is no crank sensor? then thats a problem solved.. rub-jonny many thanks for your reply i'm at my wits end....

how can i tell if the fuel pump primes?

cheers :-)

have you given it a service? New plugs, leads, dizzy, fuel filter, oil filter and oil? try sticking about half a can of carb cleaner in the TB, worked for me on my 2E

If not it could be the ignition switch?

well car runs so ignore priming :)

sounds to me like throttle could do with a clean, and the isv too if that doesnt help.  also get it on vag-com and check the measuring blocks, you can check to see what the ecu temp and throttle position sensors are telling the ecu.

oh and try disconnecting the lambda probe plug. if problem solved, you need a new one :)
