what gearbox is in my mk2 gti 8v urgent

a m8 has come to the rescue with two spare boxes  for free if i go pick them up from kent   so ill put one in and then clean one up do the bolt kit and fit a longer 5th and basically rebuilt it ready to go in when i do some engine upgrades later on

check what code the box is now, could be anything retrofitted. though the only real difference you need to worry about is input shaft spline size, and since you'll be buying a new clutch kit anyway can just match the clutch to the box.  driveshaft flanges are different sizes on lower spec models, but would be unlikely these were changed as well as box. could still have happened though never know whats been done to an 18 year old car

well the new box is in i had bought a new clutch but when i got the box off i found a new clutch underneath it already


the only difference that i can see is the electrical plug on the top ...   the one thats gone in has a massive plug ... the one tht came out had a small 2 pin plug ...  i guess this means my mpg gauge wont work ?

nah wont effect the mpg gauge. the large multi pin thing is for the old skool mpg needle gauge fitted to the really early mk2s and the mk1s. yours is purely vacuum one. what this means is your reverse lights will no longer work unless you get yourself an old skool multi pin plug and splice this to your wiring loom. i just might have one somewhere?  this assumes the switch actually works too
