Top mounts?
« on: 09 November 2010, 22:25 »
Newbie question...

Failed MOT on Monday due to 'rear offside shock insecure'. I checked it out and it appears that the rubber bush which sits between the top of the strut and the underside of the wheel arch is missing (possible error by previous owner while fitting coilovers). Is this the part that is referred to as the top mount?

There is another rubber bush which sits in a dish on top of the wheel arch, which can be seen from in the boot... I'm not talking about this rubber mount... I'm talking specifically about the one which sits on top of the strut and pushes up in to the underside of the wheel arch.

I need to source a new part obviously, but wanted to check that I'm searching for the correct part first.

FK Automotive coilovers have been fitted, in case that changes anything.

Cheers

Also double check that it isnt stuck up the top of the wheel arch/mount.

Yep, found that diagram late last night and ordered the kit from vwspares.

I didn't check that the mount was still stuck up in the wheel arch. I hope it isn't as it will spoil the theory that the missing mount is the cause of the insecure shock.

if you have coilovers this probably wont be the casue, on the oem shocjks there is a small circlip which basically holds all the top of the shocks up. there is a washer that sits on that, then the metal plate. if the circlip goes or the metal plate it'll all collapse into the boot.  coilovers are a different design so this doesnt usually happen :)

The mounts arrived today (kudos vwspares). It took 20 mins to replace all 4 and it fixed the insecure shock problem.

This is how all vehicle repairs should be.
