First post! Some newb questions...
« on: 03 November 2010, 10:23 »
Morning all! Bought a f reg oak green 3 door 16v at the weekend.  Have a 1.3 as my first car, then a friend lent me his 16v for six months at some point in the past.  Have passed thru my sensible late 20's and am now approaching (early) mid life crisis, hence the return to the mighty mk2...

Anyway, onto the questions.  The car I've bought is mechanically sound but a bit chavved up - it's so low I can't get it down the incline at my old man's house, which is a problem as I'm about to disappear to Africa for 10 weeks work.  The car has adjustable shocks but I tried to adjust yesterday - despite increasing the spring length by 30mm there was no difference in ride height - I guess these shocks are set that low as they come?  They are unbranded but looking round the available options on flea bay it say they are jamex.  Is it possible they need the gas pressure increasing to gain ride height?

The next question follows on from the last.  If I can't raise the car by saturday then I'm forced to put the car on the drive - there is a massive tree overhanging which drops tops of leaves, sap, and sh!t from all the birds living in it.  I used to have an old (1959) beetle which I kept outdoors with a semi breathable cover on, I know they are not fully waterproof but would this be better for the car than a proper waterproof tarp style cover?  I won't be back till Jan but I'm going to get my bro to take the cover off every fortnight, dry the cover and wash the car... Sound like a plan? Any other (better) ideas?

Other than that, usual rough idle, but to be fair the car has barely done 1000 miles in the last 3 years! Will have it serviced while I'm away.  Any good recommendations for gti specialists near Brighton?

Cheers guys... Bring on the sarcasm!

Luke

There will be no damping/gas pressure adjustment on a cheap set of jamex coilovers (or similar), just the rings at the bottom of the spring stack to adjust with a c-spanner. It sounds like you've had a go at those already, can they be wound further up?

Drop some penetrating oil on the threads before hand to help in adjustment, as they are prone to seizing in place! Good luck.

If that dosent work, down comes the tree!

well, I managed to get the suspension raised.  Now I have a new problem.  A much, much bigger problem....

First time I've had the opportunity to really open her up last night, which i did.  Second gear, up to 6000 rpm (engine fully warmed up of course).  Didn't get anywhere near the red zone, back off, rev counter needle starts jumping around like the signal from the ecu has gone intermittent... Idles ok (lumpy as usual) at next set of lights, then pulling away feels like its running on three, then stalls.  Will just start and idle a bit but wont pull.  Have had to lock it and leave it where it was last night.

Think its slipped the cambelt by a tooth or two, or its runing on three for some other reason. So, anyone know of any good gti specialist in the Worthing vicinity?  I was going to have some other work done on it anyway, only now it needs recovering too (as I'm not in the RAC/AA).

I'm off to start looking for garages on t'internet but if anyone has any recommendations...

bah

Hopefully you've not left it under a tree.....

Sorry to hear that tho, I have no Idea what makes your k-jet injection system work, so have no useful problem solving info for you. This may be worth a read:

Good luck with it, it will live again!

cheers for the info, ive bookmarked that, im sure ill be needing it in the future...

after getting quotes for 60 quid to move it ive just bought RAC menbership instead - full package is 115 quid but with 40 quid cashback thru quidco...  gonna take it to G-Werks in Littlehampton for them do sort it, do the service an some tidying.  Would normally do it myself, but as I said, am off to Africa on Sunday.

Oh well, good while it lasted...hopefully it'l  just be sorted with a new cambelt and will be in fine shape by the time I get back to the UK...

Cheers guys

By the way, whats normal oil temp for the 16v?  Mine seems to hover around 95-100 degress, seems a little hot?

Mine is an 8v, and sits around 100 on the MFA oil temp readout. Up towards 120 when its being driven enthusiastically. Ive heard 16v's can run warmer, so 95-100 is fine for the oil. Of course the age of the sensors may mean they are not as accurate as they once were!
