Battery Drain
« on: 29 October 2010, 15:28 »
So I had my battery replaced last year because it kept going flat. I was told various things but basically that something was draining it.

So one year later, same problem, VW are saying the battery is fine but that I need to ensure I use the car regular, say every two days.

Does anybody know what to do? I am a bit scared it will happen again.  :embarassed:

Do you have an aftermarket head unit? Sometimes they can drain the battery if there is a wiring mistake.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

If you have also upgraded to a higher spec OEM radio, without the proper software coding, this can also drain the battery...i.e. From RCD 300 to RCD 500 etc.

I had a fault with the light in the glovebox, it had blown but was draining the battery. Replaced the light and the battery drain didn't happen again.

Check to see if the light is gone, I initially disconnected it and things improved.
I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades. Especially if your teammates are bad guessers.

I think I do have the upgraded radio. It has Sat Nav on there etc...........they did say sometimes the radio turns itself on somehow!! Anyway, the annoying thing is how the hell can a car just be drained of battery? It's ridiculous!! Anyway, they fixed it for free and offered to do a week long drain test but there are definitely no lights on in the car as I've had them all switched off and I don't use any of them..............

What I am thinking is what is the best way to actually fix the problem long term as it's annoying to get in your car and find it doesn't start and invariably it's the times when I really need it : - (

Early GTI's can experience battery drain with the RNS510

When I fitted a RCD510 for RCD310 I had battery drain.

The new radio was draining at about 0.080 amp instead of 0.005 amps.

I fitted a ON/OFF switch in line with fuse at the rear of the radio. This was a temp. fix.

I have now replaced the Can Gateway with the latest version and had to Recode it with VCDS.

If you want any more help let me know.

Yep, what he said. If you have retro fitted to a later version and you have an early model you may experience battery drain. This is the way to fix it (and isnt always cheap if you dont have the software or know how).

AlanD, what do you mean by 'earlier model'.  I've got an 08 plate golf and looking to upgrade to the RCD510.  Would this need the extra wiring etc??

Many thanks mate
