hey folks,
just a note for any MK3 GTi owners who're having troubles with starting or stalling problems.
i went today to my local VW dealer and spoke to one of the mechanics about my recent problems with my GTi playing up. ( referring to my recent postings on the forum ). He plugged my Golf into the diagnostics and it came with a fuel fault. He cleared that but the problem with starting and stalling persisted.
he suggested to me the following as he suspected an earthing problem between the battery and the starter motor:-
1. disconnect & remove the battery.
2. unbolt the battery base plate ( there should be 4 10mm bolts holding it in place).
3. under the base plate there are two earth points. unbolt these from the bulkhead and using wet and dry remove any build up of rust and dirt.
4. clean up the two bolts and spray with good old WD40.
5. replace the two earth wires and bolt back down tight then cover the bolts and connections with a little spray grease.
6. replace the battery and clean up the terminals
there is also an earth wire located at the right hand side of the engine block, ( as you look at the engine ), again unbolt this earth wire and clean up til its free from rust build up.
dont know if this will work in the long run but ive certainly noticed a difference so far. theres no lag from the engine as i put the foot down and it starts a dream.
hope this is of some use to those who are having the same problem i did. you can let me know if this worked for any one else.
happy motoring
Ronnie
