MK3 GTI 8v won't start
« on: 28 January 2005, 10:40 »
My Mk 3GTi 8v won't start. It is totally dead :-(, came out of the sports centre after an hour or so and it was just dead. It had started okay twice just before that after being parked all day at work.

The battery is okay, about 1 year old and fully charged.
Car won't jump start off another car.
Car seems like it will bump start if I could have got some help to push it a bit quicker.
The battery, oil and other dashlight come on and stay on when starting.
With headlights on the headlights dim on turning the ignition.
There is no clicking noise when starting.
There is a slight buzzing noise, from somewhere - can't tell if is under the dash (fuses ?) or engine bay.

So it seems like a dodgy starter motor to me ? Or maybe the starter relay or solenoid or wiriing ?

Any suggestions as to what to check first ? Before going out any buying any new parts.

Thanks, Neil

Wont be the solenoid as that is working as the way i would check to see if a solenoid was working is to see if the lights dimmed when i tryed to turn engine over, so to me it sounds like the starter motor mate.

Sounds like a starter to me, give it a tap with some one holding the key on and she if she goes

i think that clicking noise is from the relay. yeah i would say do a bench test on the starter motor

also try putting the car in gear and rocking it backwards and forwards, that sometimes will free a seized starter motor.

The rocking has been known to work .

Do all the lights come on and go off [ i.e. airbag and ABS ] ?

If they dont then i reckon its the battery, it takes a lot of power to get these things started with all the extra stuff they have on them .

I might be that your imobiliser is not getting enough power . Ive tried to bump start mine in the past with no luck at all .

Car will bump start.

I definitely seems like a starter motor overhaul.
