Standard Sachs or Luk will be fine, you only need uprated if your running a lot more power.

Are you planning on giving the gearbox or the engine a makeover while it's out? It might be an idea to do some major things while it's out if you want to save money and time later in it's service life.

Well the 16v's weakness is the diff, I think it's the same on a few other gearboxes too. The diff is riveted on and it is known for 'boxes with miles on them to blow due to the diff coming apart. There's a bolt kit you can buy, this sorts out the problem completely as it exchanges used and word rivets for some strong bolts. However this job means taking the gearbox completely apart so it is a job for a specialist or a competent DIY person. I've never done it, so I can't tell you exactly what's involved in doing so but I'm sure others can.

i looked at lsd for them but at 500 quid its a bit steep although maybe i could try and source one with lsd already in it?

a longshot though i reckon!

cost is a bit of an issue here, hence the second hand and not a recon!

If cost is an issue then a box with an LSD won't be cheap. As you said, £500 new thereabouts, however according to Ess_three it does transform the car completely.

I got my Sachs clutch kit from www.vwspares.co.uk they were the cheapest at the time.

No need for uprated on a standard engine. I went for the Sachs clutch kit because they have a good reputation and I didn't want to have problems later on by fitting a cheap quality one.

For some reason the VR^ clutch kit was a few quid cheaper but also fits perfectly so I bought that one instead.
