Two big adjustable spanners thats all you need to do the fuel filter one nut on the filter to hold tight the other to undo the union its simple mate just watch fuel and pressure don't undo the union too fast at least let some fuel and pressure escape for ten minutes. I usually have a smoke when doing this job
Remember there is a washer at one end dont loose it or just reuse the old one if its in good stead.
A plastic bucket to catch fuel dripping is not a bad idea! At vag there only about £10 or less?
Also the filter is directional i.e flow of fuel towards the engine it will have a big arrow stamped on the filter!
If its a 8V one end might be just a clamp and pipe instead of union bolt you will know soon as your under that car.

Transfer pump is surely the lift pump in the tank .. much more likely than a blocked fuel filter and easier to change

Yeah its proberly something else, but a car should have it done if its never been done before, and I've just done mine and opened the old one up it was full of dirt and sand I'm sure the fuel pumps will appreciate it changed out for chump change?

Sorry, wasn't saying don't change the filter, just a thought regarding the running problem .. once it's running right he can change all the filters he likes :)

so i took it into the shop because i could not figure out what the heck was goin on or where to get the parts as i live in the US and certain parts are kinda hard to find.

how much does a transfer pump cost and is it hard to replace.. thats what they told me was more than likely wrong with it. they are charging me 95$ for the pump and the job is totaling at like 230$ if you include the diagnostic check and the work to put it in.. is this a reasonable price for the job?
truthfully i dont think so but whats your guys opinion on the matter??
I CANNOT FIND A TRANSFER PUMP ONLINE TO SAVE MY LIFE!!! how much do they usually go for?

In the uk a lift pump .. assuming that's what a transfer pump is .. is about £25.00 and it should take about 15minutes to change. Diagnostic check? Is that even possible on a mk2 golf?!! Tell them to stop being ridiculous, order a pump from somewhere and change it yourself. $230 is a joke

Check HT leads too. Could be more simple than you think

had a similar issue with mine the other dsay i was using some wd40 for a rusted bolt and thought i might try the age old non starter trick and sprayed dizzy cap and all ht leads with wd40 along with a liberal spray on various other parts of the engine bay and ive never heard it run so sweetly ...

cap and rotor have just been replaced but the leads look new  however i shall be buying some genuine vag leads because apparently the 8v is picky about its leads

Had a carbon copy problem on my Sierra many moons ago. Had a fiddle with the dizzy and eventually replaced the HT leads. Ran like a dream afterwards
