GTD - is it a good deal ?
« on: 06 October 2010, 23:02 »
Currently driving Dec 06 (56 plate) A3 Sportback 2.0TDI S-Line S-Tronic (140). Had set my heart on a Countryman ALL4 D and gave Mini dealer deposit months ago on refundable basis subject to drive etc. So duly had my drive and decided that car is bit Micky Mouse, underpowered at only 110HP and no auto until end Q1 2011. Also by time I'd added few toys the cost was just > £25k. If it had been an 'S'D with BMW 2l Diesel might have been worth it and good fun, but not for a lack lustre 1.6 D.

So as I must have 5 doors due to kids I looked at the GTD and have found a Sept 09 (59) with 20k miles with following spec which I've negotiated to £20k:

Black Pearl
DSG
Leather
Sunroof
Nav
Bluetooth (VW kit as opposed to factory)
Winter Pack
AAC
Park Sensors

..so although bit high on miles appears to be much less than any at VW main dealer. Not a prob for me as my mileage is circa 8k pa. However still need to find £9k to change but feel A3 is starting to feel dated although for price I've been offered by Audi specialist dealer at £11k is lots of car for money.

So how good a deal is the Gtd and should I go for it ??

Buy it!!!!!!!! Monster car................... awesome spec yes mileage is high for age thats why its cheap and if you do less than average miles in a few years it will be back to normal mileage anyway.

I love mine too.

I`ve got just over 10k on her and starting to loosen up really well now, much nicer than when the engine was brand new. I`ve heard in the past that it takes 20k for it to loosen up properly anyway, so you could be getting it just as its hitting its prime?

You`ll prolly get another few GTIers telling you to get one instead of a GTD, and for 8k miles a year, I can see why, I dont think that diesels are supposed to be really worth the money unless you do more than 12k pa, but I really dont mind diesels anyhoo.

£9,000 to change for a car 3 years newer in that range sounds about right to me.

8000 miles a year isn't enough to justify a diesel on economic terms, but it should retain more of it's money when you come to change it in a few years time. Especially as it will be low mileage then.

Despite what other people think of the diesel engined cars, matched to the DSG it makes for a cracking every day car. For the 95% of the time you're not on a charge, stick it in D and let it do it's thing.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Was too good to be true - car is a PX at Land Rover dealer. Wanted to confirm spec so called VW dealer with reg no to cheek - low & behold car is man not DSG. Autotrader ad said DSG and parted with £500 deposit on that basis. Salesman on day off today but expecting apology & refund tomorrow. Really p***ed as agreed deal to sell my A3 to Audi specialist and unless find something by early next week will have to back out. Aaaargh !

Back to drawing board.

Manual is as good as DSG and it's nicer to hold your knob in your hand
