ok i was wanting to fit a gti lump into my golf but the work will take too long with the looms and keys, box, hubs, blah blah,
So would it be possible to rebore my AEX 1.4 to a 1.6? is there any room there to do it without compromising engine strength? ta

In that case you stuck with the 1.4, anything else will mean wiring and ecu plus uprating the brakes.

Depending on the engine code it's not even bore that give it the displacement. It's a mixture of head shape and pistons/crank/a few associated bits. Some Polo modders use this fact to mix'n'match heads and blocks.

Yes it can be rebored but to get to a 1.6 or close would mean changing the crank to increase the stroke.

If i remember correctly the A series short block engines are all the same anyway

1.0L, 1.4L, 1.6L They have different porting in the heads (i guess)  and im not 100% sure but im pretty sure its just the stroke thats different between the 1.4 and 1.6, be honest i cant remember.... swapping pistons and head can/may be as simple as that

But the point is...  for the sake of swapping a loom you would be mad to think a re-bore is easier! Engine swap = big improvements, lots of self satisfaction,  and its much easier ... really it is, doesn't seem it but it is!

a proper re-bore and hone isn't cheap for starters, then you've got labour time to strip the whole engine down, while its apart new bearings, seals etc - would cost more and take longer than just doing a swap

Full engine overhall your looking £700 ish  Without a rebore!

And its madness not to overhall everything and replace what is nessasry while its out!
