So? What about Dual clutch transmission

Again major work.

So what?

The verdict is that it's a very very expensive thing to do, and it's something that unless you are looking to get into competition, it's not really worth doing.

Yep spot on.

Fitting DSG?
VW 'tall block' DSG will physically fit...if you are lucky and make new mounts. But, they are big and heavy!
Then you need the controllers...which are CAN-Bus.
The Mk3 is not. So you need to change the Mk3 to CAN-Bus electrics...including the steering wheel and column, to get the 'paddles' (sadly, nothing more than feel-free micro switches) and accelerator pedal...you'd also need the Mk4/5/6 engine and DBW system if you wanted rev-matching/rev blipping.

And then you end up with a gearbox that does what it wants anyway, not exactly what you want, as a proper H pattern manual, or sequential 'box proper.

Maybe the newer Polo/Ibiza/Fabia dty clutch 7 speed DSGs would be better/easier...as they are lighter, less complicated and the lesser torque capability is less of an issue for your average Mk3...but I don't know if they fit 'tall block' engines.

Is the 1.2TSI/1.4TSI Twincharged a 'short block' or 'tall block' derived engine?
I don't know.

Mother is collecting a 1.2 TSI DSG Fabia in the next couple of weeks...so I'll have the chance to try it, and see if it's any 'better' than the larger wet clutch 6 speed DSGs. Unlikely, sadly...

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Well a mate of mine bought a brand new Hewland sequential 6 speed transaxle to go in the back of his Cavalier Coupe (long story, it's more a Cavalier shaped box to contain a lot of very trick bits!) and I know that came in at £5k - £6k. They probably do a similar unit for transverse set ups - touring cars and the like - but I doubt it would be any cheaper.
