Top mount nut
« on: 02 October 2010, 15:57 »
Im fitting my new suspension next weekend so was having a look to see what tools i need for the job,my question is do you need a special tool to undo the front topmount nut,its a 1997 8v gti and it looks as if there is just a big nut that screws onto the top of the strut that holds it and the top mount in place,is this the case as i thought the top mount was held on by a big allen bolt

cheers.

The nut size should be the same as the spark plug socket. 22mm I think.

The allen key part is you need to hold the strut piston rod that goes through the centre of the nut. You can fit an allen key through the centre of the spark plug socket and then undo with a spanner on the flats of the spark plug socket. You are better off using a long allen key that fits into a socket to give you more leverage.

Instead of the spark plug socket you can use a deep swan neck ring spanner if you want.

mine dosnt have the allen key in the middle its just a big bolt that winds onto the top of the strut that looks as if it holds everything in place.

It should be as Paul said.
Has yours got a hex head on the top of the shock rod instead?
Can you post a pic?

Sorry to bump a old thread.

Would using a 12v impact driver be up to the job of removing the nut.

Ta..

i thought mine was a 21mm.

Pretty sure it's a 22m socket and a 7mm allen key that are required.

Ones that came on the car are 22mm and the one's that come on the coilovers are 21mm, had that issue with mine haha, best way i found doing it is grinding down the edge of a socket and twisting with a spanner while holding with allen key... or my last way included a blowtorch and drill :D

Correct a 7mm allen key and 22mm Spanner required if standard.
