Engine Stop in Reverse Gear!!
« on: 29 September 2010, 09:29 »
I wonder anyone could assist me with following issue.

I’m having a problem with my  GT TDi mk4 (1998) golf.  Sometimes, when select reverse gear car engine cut off and all dash board power goes out. And soon as come out from reverse gear (to any other gear /neutral) power comes back on and I can re start. If i put to reverse again it gets cut off.
However after several try’s  it will get back to normal and allow to select reverse gear and work well.

Any ideas for this strange problem…

ANY ONE

Never heard anything like that heppening before. Only thing I can think of is a short on something like the reverse light making the power cut out. But that is a weird problem.

Thanks for the reply.
Short-circuit is my guess too. Just wonder is this sort of a indication to change clutch plate, gear parts…I have no idea.
But other than this issue no issues with car such as specific noise in reverse gear or clutch.

Had the same trouble again yesterday… engine got cut off in  reverse gear and soon as changed from reverse to any other gear engine working fine.

Any ideas please…

could be the gear selector on the gearbox is pinching a loose wire, have a look on the gearbox for any frayed wires, seems the more likely cause if its actually stopping the car starting.

What did you do exactly ? I am experiencing the same problem. When I put the car in reverse the engine turns of and the cluster goes crazy. I don't know exactly what is happening, but I had to remove the reverse bulbs so I will still be able to use the car in reverse. Should I replace the reverse switch or is there a fix for it ? Thanks.
