Golf Match 1.4 TSI 6 speed manual £17,965 - non-metallic paint
Golf Match 1.6 TDI 5 speed manual £18,750 - non-metallic paint

Price difference just £785, the TSI being the cheaper one and IMO the nicer drive.

Tough choice gotta weigh up the increase in mpg which in the real world will be 15mpg, road tax saving of £100 a year just a guess, higher resell back for the diesel. 1.4tsi does drive better as 17ps more but diesel is fine IMO

I can live without the Fogs i guess and the colour choices are blue graphite and deep black pearl

Deep black pearl, absolutely stunning especially when clean and catching the sun.  Mind you I'm slightly biased as mine is deep black pearl,  whatever you go for and personally I'd get the Match enjoy.
Deep Black Pearl Mk7 GT TDI 150.

If i had not bought the GTI i would still be running deisels because of the torque, because of equipment differences it would be the match for me. A mate of mine at work runs the older engined mk6 2.0 TDI 110PS SE (the engine the 1.6TDI replaced) and its a nice car.

Well, if it's a first car maybe a Polo would be a bit better size and definately cheaper. But that I guess comes down to how old you are and who's coughing up for the car.
Again, whether Diesel or petrol comes down to driving style.
I'd go for the Diesel. But in a Polo or Ibiza SC.

Must admit the young lad at work who bought the TDI110SE i did ask why? Mainly because he went from a MINI cooper S works (200bhp) down to a non sporty setup TDI (110bhp). For the same money he paid for the year old golf he could have had a brand new SEAT ibiza FR TDI 140bhp which would have been my choice at his age and relationship status.

He may think he wants a Golf, but he may not actually want a Golf
How far does the average person look into buying a car? People buy VWs because of the badge and a Golf is the most recognisable VW. Those two small engines are crap in Golfs, Polos and Ibizas are much lighter.

I've been looking at FR 140s myself. In fact I put up a thread about it on Cupranet not long ago
