Well, if it's a first car maybe a Polo would be a bit better size and definately cheaper. But that I guess comes down to how old you are and who's coughing up for the car.
Again, whether Diesel or petrol comes down to driving style.
I'd go for the Diesel. But in a Polo or Ibiza SC.
He wants to buy a Golf.
He may think he wants a Golf, but he may not
actually want a Golf

How far does the average person look into buying a car? People buy VWs because of the badge and a Golf is the most recognisable VW. Those two small engines are crap in Golfs, Polos and Ibizas are much lighter.
Must admit the young lad at work who bought the TDI110SE i did ask why? Mainly because he went from a MINI cooper S works (200bhp) down to a non sporty setup TDI (110bhp). For the same money he paid for the year old golf he could have had a brand new SEAT ibiza FR TDI 140bhp which would have been my choice at his age and relationship status.
I've been looking at FR 140s myself. In fact I put up a thread about it on Cupranet not long ago
