Top speed

Be cool to fabricate some extra's to the golf, like a new front undertray and adjustable or different splitter. For a 99 onwards car they were good, I remember my mk4 6n polo even though it was 96reg it was way ahead of its competitors interior and extrerior wise in comparison to the saxo, fiesta etc..

I love the diffusers for touring cars etc especially around the arches, but a golf is not that type of car, but improving the front could be a good start from splitter and undertray. I would say flatten its belly, but speed bumps are a pain already

But if you flatten the belly you can slide over speed bumps It definately needs something to pull the front down but whatever we fabricate it needs to be easily removed otherwise you could be an hour just removing undertray lol Im definately tempted to get a cheap bumper off ebay and have a go at testing

Going to have to look out what splitters are on the market as i hate the anni one somthing thicker and sticking out, developing a new undertray could be easy. For me it will be permanent so removal is not an option, but I do love the "AeroCatch" mechanisms being used on cars to fasten panels together or the DZUS straps/fasteners.

Be good to make something though as this was what was making me steer off the golf for some time and debating a "TT mk1 1.8T K04" for a track project as them lads have tractions control, esp, 4wd and talk alot more about discussions especially on the downforce side as well as different rear spoilers. Only thing thats making me stick with the golf is it still has potential and with all the work done so far switching to the TT would be a waste of time and money especially in price difference. then the golf is more fun to drive as none of that "fancy sh!t" like traction control. 

So what do you do for a living tech as it would be intresting if you could develop anything?

I work for the metropolitan police for a living and cars have been my hobby/life for years.. I have picked up a few bits and bobs over time

Yes the aero catches seem a good idea.. could also make up some kind of catch to hold the bumpers on for easy removal and refitting like the track cars have.. i think Jake is making his bumpers quick release for speed at the track..

PC in the met? I work for the courts, hoping to get out of all that nonsense soon. Was looking at joining the met myself but things have gone tits up in terms of recruitment as I know alot of the officers down Bromley and alot of the traffic team for SE region including some of the marlowe house team down sidcup.

Jake's project looks intresting can't wait till his wide body kit is on as well as additional things he might end up doing to it aerodynamically. But his plans are solid and the outcome will definetly be intresting.

Think I will have to start researching and getting a book on car aerodynamics

Nope just a pcso at the moment testing the water seeing if i want to become a PC at a later date.. Yer recruitment has all gone tits up will start again in a couple of years..

I have started another thread asking people they're ideas on ways to produce downforce be good to see some answers.. Getting a book would be a good idea.. There was a guy who made a 200sx from a bare shell and he was amazing with aerodynamics and downforce etc each panel was custom and it looked amazing apparently because the car was so aerodynamic he didnt as much power as the competition because his car just glided around the track..

it wouldnt, power is whats needed, a standard 150 would never max out 5th.

and isnt the 6 speed just a shorter shift with same final drive?

An o2j 5 speed is 23.9mph/1000rpm, so with a 6700rpm rev limit gives 160mph theoretical maximum.

With a max rev limit of 8200rpm(big turbo guys), you get 196mph

An 02m 6 speed is 24.6mph/1000rpm, so this gives 165mph, and 202mph

you said that word there though, theoretical, its not the gearing thats limiting the gti, its wind resistance vs power. the way i read his post it sounded like he just thought if he bolted a 6 speed box onto his car right now, would it make it faster, and the answer is no it wouldnt.

Again your wrong fella.

If a five speed car was fitted with a six speed box it's top speed would increase,at any given rpm the six speed box WILL give a higher speed due to the higher mph per 1000rpm ratio.All std 1.8t's will reach the rev limit.

It's pretty simple when you think about it

how? youve just said the thoretical top speed of a 5 speed box is 160mph, yet the actual top speed is 135, therefore the engine doesnt reach its maximum revs, fitting a 6 speed box would drop the revs needed for the same speed, but this could actually lower the top speed if the torque is reduced, not sure where the 1.8t lies with this.

i saw it with my old fiesta 1.0, had a 4speed box and managed 90mph (private test track ) fitted a 5 speed box and it wouldnt even reach 80

Most 6spd boxes use 6th as a overdrive, top speed is reached in 5th.
