crunching 2nd gear and clear gear oil!!
« on: 21 January 2005, 01:12 »
the vr6 has for abit being crunching on high rev 2nd gear changes! but it doesnt do it all the time!
so did suspect the oil maybe low!
but i think it need the semi or fully syn in it!

i also think its to do with the crap cable shift !!

so until i can do an oil change on it i just topped it up i did this 2 year ago! and it only needed a bit until it started to run back out! we really should have changed it but the car hasnt been used everyday until the gti broke!

so on the drive because the garage is full of junk!
i undid the plug and oil trickled out so theres oil in it!

but the oil was clear it look clear when it was on my hand! so on it trickling out i put the plug back in and when to get some tissue to wipe the the bit on the drive and even once i wiped it off the drive it looked like new gear oil same colour!

ive never see gear oil come out of a box clear!!!!

anyone else had clear oil come out of the gearbox!!

Certainly relating to MK1, 2nd gear crunch is synchro but I guess the same with others. Been told using fully synthetic oil in the g-box can stop it?

My 2nd gear is crunching too. I read someplace it costs about ?120 to have it fixed. But i went today to a VW specilist and he said that its gonna be cheaper to replace the whole gearbox and im looking at a lot of money

Try some slick50 gearbox treatment, it cost about ?16 for an 80ml bottle which is meant to treat the gearbox for 40,000 miles. Apparently it can make quite a difference to the crunchy second gear synchromesh.

How would that be applied? Does it involve dropping out the gearox? or do you put it in with the gear box oil?

Try using castrol syntrax gearbox oil.
It has made quite a difference in all the cars i have used it in, and thats a few!

If you remove the nearside front wheel you will see a 17mm allen bolt on the end of the gearbox, remove this and squirt the slick50 in there. To remove the bolt from the gearbox I used a 17mm wheelnut and a 17mm spanner.
