Clunkety Clunk
« on: 20 January 2005, 18:20 »
Hi for a week now my car has been making a progressively worsening clunking sound when accelerating and braking and sometimes in between.  What I find is that it doesn't make this noise when the clutch is depressed regardless of speed.

A mate thought it was an engine mount at the rear (drivers side) So I ordered one.  Got under there to  fix it today (in the pissin rain) got absolutely soaked.  Whilst i was arsing around i happened to  notice that every nut in the inner CV was only finger tight.
When I started shaking it, it made a right rattle.  I screwed all the nuts back in and tigtened them up.  Problem is, it still rattles like hell.  Question is....

is my inner CV f**ked (only 5 months old)  or can it be fixed and was it this that was making the noise the whole time??

thx for help, as you can probably tell its really pissed me off for the last few days.
regards
Marco

easiest way to check for engine mount, which would make a clunk, is to get a mate to release the clutch in gear with the handbreak on and see if the engine climbs out of the engine bay! you'll see what i mean if that is the case. the cv joint should give a knocking noise rather than a clunk i think.........

welp when i tightened  up the nuts the clunking stopped but a rattling appeared.  So it sounds like the driveshaft nuts being loose was the problem.  Went to the local garage today to have it looked at.  Even though  you can shake the driveshaft and there's a slight rattle he said it was fine.  He reckons the problem is that the offside rear bush on the wishbone is fooked.  Only problem is I replaced these a few months ago, ordered the parts from GSF.  I decided sod it and booked it in for the work to be done because i'm fed up of getting wet working on the car.  Question is....won't my parts from GSF still be under warantee?  Thx for replies
Very helpful
cheers marco
