Steve the DSG on the R is a bit temperamental, from what I've heard from the other R owners anyway. Lots of threads about it always being in the wrong gear and losing drive, add that to a large turbo and it can take a while to spin up properly. Its caught me out a few times in the manual, when I was getting used to it. Personally I prefer to drive my cars with manual, although in town I sometimes wish I had an auto

i've never drove the Edition 30 or the R, but just considering the basics like cost, running costs, comfort and that sort of thing, personally I'd keep the Edition 30.

Well you're in a great place to judge having driven neither.

I owned an ED30 for around 20 months, and have had my R since April - and I can quite happily confirm that the R gets better MPG and is as comfy if not comfier than the ED30 to drive.  I'm on 19's and have ACC.
I have a 3 year servicing plan for £250 - which the dealer gave me free - so my running costs should only be petrol and maybe a set of tyres over the 3 years I'll keep the car.  I only drive about 6-8k miles a year, so I should avoid any big expences.

Well thanks again for everyone's comments.

Here are my thoughts on the options:

5 door
Prob silver with silver 19's - or one of the blues (my Ed30's steel grey).
DSG, AAC
RNS510 - but is it true I can't have DAB as well?
Lux pack - folding mirrors etc
Winter pack
Recaro seats
iPod and phone prep
Armrest
Cruise
Front / Rear parking sensors
Electric rears (standard on the Ed30 but not on the R )
MFSW
then the boring stuff like alarms.

That little lot pushes it up to around 41k! Though it will most likely be my company, not me, paying for it.

Anything important I've missed?

Fair point - but I don't want a Cayman - I need something that's practical and doesn't shout about itself.

911 one day though - when the kids grow up

Yup... the reversing camera!
For £155 its rude not to take it.  You'd be surprised how much you use it, and its a nice gimmick.
