3000 miles and one new starter motor!
« on: 17 August 2010, 19:52 »
Hi all!

Well going to pick my GTD up tomorrow as had a few problems with it, but the most intresting one was this!

Started about a week ago when you started the engine it would make a constant noise sounded like some sort of pump/electric motor, quite lound coming from under air box/battery/gearbox area! Then even when you stopped the car took the key out it would still do it from anything from 1 to 2 minutes after stopping the car! While this noise was going on with the key out of the car there were no warning lights and if you tried to start the car it wouldn't, so wait fo the noise to stop then start the car and all was fine again. It did this about half a dozen times before it went into the dealers. My mechanical knowledge is quite good and the only thing I could think of was the aux water pump (sounded to loud though) or the starter motor, but as we all know soon as the starter motor runs the starter gear engages? maybe new ones don't work like this? I'm picking it up tomorrow and they have replaced the starter motor so hope this cures it! just thought I would let you all know in case anyone else has the same problem!

Starter motor?? even after you take the key out and the engine has stopped. Would be good to hear what VW say the problem was!

Sounds like thw water pump. Continues to pump after the engine is off, although that doesn't explain the engine not starting after you stop the car! Am sure you have your upmost faith on vw solving it!

I don't think so Kenny.

Since when have VW used electric water pumps? The GTD water pump is belt driven and it £122. I know they use electric thermostats by that I mean electrically regulated not a motor.

You sure there isn't an auxiliary pump that runs after the engine turns off? My polo 1.8t had one.

Yes, it says it in the Engine Study Document

shut-off.

It seems to run for about five minutes after switching off.

Thats what I thought at first, aux water pump, but the noise was far too loud! anyway starter motor replaced and no problems yet! still don't see how it was doing it?
