Urgent help needed please!!!
« on: 13 August 2010, 21:54 »
Hi all, well I love my retro cars and when a 1992 1.8 CL came up in good condition I had to have it.

Problem is that after a week im having problems starting it. It starts fine first thing in the morning when cold but if you turn it off the try to restart it you have to turn it over alot and it doesnt fire up but more splutter.

If I take my foot off the throttle when its spluttering it will cut out, if I keep my foot planted and drive off its ok???

Also when it splutters it throws out smoke too

When moving the engine is smooth and powerfull, hopefully this is a common problems that you experts have encountered.

Any help or advice please

Thanks

Could be alot of things really....

start with the cheapest and easiest things.... spark plugs, leads, Petrol Filter, vac pipes, oil breathers etc... etc... clean the throttle body....

Good luck :)

If the plugs and leads etc needed replacing wouldnt it struggle to start all the time. It starts cold fine but once it has been started it struggles when you try again.

Thanks for the responces

Best adv would be use the search button mate, you hit the nail on the head, very common and usually the same few things cause it!
Have a search and you'll be busy with ideas all day and have enough time left to have a pint later ;)

Believe me its a dead ringer for you! Even says something stupid!

Ill try them all but the crank sensor sounds out of my capabilities...dont fancy unbolting the engine on my own.

Should have stayed with new cars :embarassed:

Found this on a dead forum and it fits my problem perfectly

ibby:
I have a mk3 1.4 golf c. Which always starts first time round from cold. Once warmed up i dread switching it off because it then decides it doesn't want to start again. It ticks over when turning the ignition but just doesn't catch. I can sometimes wait up to about 20mins before it decides to start. I have done a few manual checks for fuel and electrical faults but nothing seems to look immediately wrong! A friend mentioned that it could be an ecu problem but i am not 100% convinced as this vehicle is a single point injection unit and aside from the starting problem the car runs like a dream....Can anybody help?......please!!!!

motorwise:
Sounds like a ignition module or trigger failure - both give these symptoms - the module is incorporated with the coil and the trigger is part of the distributor

good luck

What is the trigger though??
