Dead easy to sort mate:
1. Take the clocks out and remove the bulbs, then remove all 8 bolts/screws on the back
2. You should be able to open the clocks, carefully hinging them at the bottom where the PCB goes into the clocks
3. Lift the speedo needle over the stop and make a note where it stops
4. Take the needle off, easiest way is to place 2 blunt table knives either side and twist them
5. undo the 2 screws holding the dial face on, be carefull with these its easy to damage the face of em
6. take the speedo face off and turn it over, you should see the holes for the lower milage
7. Cut the holes out with a very sharp knife
8. Reassemble

Hi guys,

I'm running an 89 8v GTi and it has the 120mph clocks. From reading this post I think that it maybe possible to change my faces for 160mph or 140mph and change the speedo cable so they read right. Is this correct?

I want to change them as (On private property) I wound the old girl up and she went off the clock!

From what I've heard the 160mph uses the same drive as the 120 clocks, and the 140 has a different speedo gear.

There is a number printed on the face of the speedo somewhere, if this matches your speedo then the gear is the same
