1.8t conversion gearbox

been thinking over my shopping list for the conversion, and seen I have 02a gearbox from a 16v, and abf flywheel in my list.
As the abf flywheel is out of a 16v, and im getting a 16v box, I dont need to get the flywheel do I? Or is it a good idea to get a new one

Also, will the 16v clutch be able to handle 200+ bhp or should I get the vr6 clutch?

you need an 02a 4 pot flywheel from a G60, Corrado, Passat or MK3 ABF or TDI to match that box. some of the Passat flywheels are smaller so make sure its a 228mm type.  As for clutch, VR6 one would be a good idea if you're planning on upping the power

I guessed I'd need a the vr clutch but thought I'd ask anyway :P

The 02a box I'm getting will be from a 16v mk3 ABF, gearbox code CDA, so this should already come with the lighter flywheel, am I right?

may or may not come with flywheel....

Sachs vr clutch is a must tbh. dont be cheap and get a LUK!

Just different brand names. LUK is the cheaper brand, Sachs is meant to be the good quality brand and from the feedback people have given that have used the two different clutches on the g60/vr6 flywheel/clutch setup on mk4 1.8t's, Sachs appears to be better. Just for the price difference you might as well go for the "better" brand.

LUK are a good make but I have heard of them failing early, whereas std sachs never. Some people have had no issues at all with LUK units though, so it could be down to isolated failures.  LUK parts are used in OEM clutch kits as well, though iirc the VAG kits have LUK bits and sachs bits, the bits in the kits aren't always from the same manufacturer. for some reason people have had issues with the 'sporting' sachs units?

But this is only 2nd hand information, I cant really offer any personal experience with the LUK units as I've never fitted one.  I've only ever used sachs kits in the engine builds I have put together and touch wood, no failures yet :)

I've done about 10k of hard driving on a vr6 LUK clutch and no issues yet. That's with 260lbft of torque and pulling along a heavy mk4 estate. Now that i've said that it'll start slipping today :grin:

Have used LUK all ok in the past.
