Burnt out Rota Arm
« on: 19 July 2010, 09:10 »
My MK3 8valve has been pinking since I got it a month or so ago, I eventually got round to checking the Dizzy timing yesterday.   Dizzy timing is spot on but the rota arm aint about 10mm off the end is burnt off. Guess its time for a new dizzy cap and rota arm
Just wanted to check that this dosent point to something else being at fault and causing the rota arm to burn out

Thats odd changed rota arm, dizzy cap and leads (allready changed plugs and air mass sensor). left the battery disconected for a couple of hours (to clear the fault codes) reconected it back up left it 40min then went for a spin still running the same  scanded it with vag.com hall sensor fault...
Cleared that but havent had chance to go back out in it as I got to get ready for work  :embarassed:

Will know if its fixed on the way to work, will let you know... Fingers crossed

Grrr still pinking and 5k rev limit gonna check that timing again

its the notch between the teeth usually, but it doesnt look like the OT mark you would normally see? check the inside of the cam sprocket, sometimes there is a punch mark that lines up with the top edge of the cylinder head. if under that tipex is a 'T' then yeah thats probably the OT mark. could whip rocker cover off and check the cam lobes on #1, should be pointing up and away from each other at TDC like this-> |\  /|

yes that mark does have a T underneath, today i checked the engine timing marks and dizzy timing marks all line up... they do give or take a couple of mill.
I also noticed that when the meatal bit on the end of the rota arm came off it shaved loads off the inside of the dizzy cap so i spent about 20 min removing all the shavings and the metal rota arm end from underneath the black plastic proctection cover. how so much crap got under there I dont know (there was loads).

It seems to idle much better now, gonna check the codes in a mo and clear any there are and go for a blast. hopefuly fingers crossed

Cleared hall sensor fault with VAG..
no other faults
Went for a blast  car revs as it should, still a little lumpy but ok for now.
Come back restart car go for a drive 5k limit back.
So guys whats my next plan of action??
Knock sensor or new Dizzy or is there something else
I have allready given it 10k boost and copious amounts of redex but am running out of ideas and only really know what I've read off the forum
