As everyone else said, no point at all in putting money into the engine. They dont do a 1.4 16v mk3 golf. Have a look at insurance for a 1.6 or 1.8, the performance isnt much more, but its more nonetheless and a few people on here got a 1.8 instead of a 1.4 as the insurance was the same.

if you get a 1.4 just be prepared to down shift on hills and live in the red line :D lol

best way is roll low and slow for your first year driving, then move on from there.

9J's fit on the back, im even fitting 15mm spacers for my 9J's, although my arches are rolled :)

just try and learn as much you can in your first year and you'll soon not be silly enough to think turbo'ing a 1.4 is sensible/feasible. dont worry i was exactly the same when i got my 1.4 :D

+1 for low and slow. In running a 1.4 - they go alright for what they are and it's dependant on the driver anyway. You'll still find you're quick on the road.

Turbos a no go - the internals wouldn't cope and would end up sh1tting themselves.
Project longterm Airbanger.

My Vento is a 1.4 and it gets on fine tbh. Not fast but it never struggles either. It's too low to go fast on roads around here anyway
On the subject of turbos, yes it's possible and yes people have done it, but only in Polos/Lupos. I don't think anyone has ever bothered in a Golf since bigger and better engines are readily available.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

mine is a 1.4 and its taken me to get used o the decrease in power from my old car but its pretty good for fuel, in the last 4 days i done about 15 hours of driving and only put £180 in it (thats from iow to shrew to wales to shrew to ely to cambridge to ipswich to colchester to ipswich and back to iow again not including driving round town for a bit while i was home) and i still have fuel left, thats also driving foot to the floor for most that, and if im honest since getting the fuel filter and stuff changed its made a big difference to the speed its not so sluggish any more, but i agree with the hill comment,  :embarassed: its embarrasing when i pass every car and then get to a hill and forget to drop a gear lol!!

Look good, but will ruin the ride a bit. 16's are the best compromise between looks and ride.
