Petrol issues!!! Super or unleaded??
« on: 28 June 2010, 17:51 »
Recently my gti been underperforming slightly and noticed when sitting at lights car been a bit shuddery. Just back from garage and advised to buy super unleaded instead of standard unleaded. Is this possible or should i have been filling up with super unleaded from day one. Any advice would be great. Had engine management light on as well and has now gone off.

Dunno if standard would give those symptoms, but you really should be using super anyway. Search this forum for many discussions on this. Shell Optimax seems to be the #1 choice.

If you look inside the filler cap the sticker in there recomends 98 ron unleaded. Use Shell V-Power in mine since the day i got it.

GTI's are mapped to run to their full potential on 98 RON and above.  But unless it is very poor quality petrol, 95 RON shouldn't be causing any running issues - the engine has sensors to detect the RON rating and will alter the timing and injection sequence to compensate.  You will notice a drop in performance and probably fuel economy as well, depending on your style of driving.

When I can't find Shell I'm happy to use Tesco super, which I think is the only other 99 RON out there.

Running your GTI on normal unleaded has the "potential" of causing damage to the FSI engine..this was mentioned by the VW dealer when I bought it, not sure how true it is but I bought a performance car and want the best from it anyway so always super-unleaded for me
