The FSI technology is
optimised to run on at 98+ RON fuel, but it will run on 95... just not as sweetly.
VW claim catalytic converters can be damaged by running 95 for extended periods, though. So what is likely to be more expensive in the long run? Super unleaded, or a new catalytic converter?
Plus, 98+ RON burns more efficiently, so the extra cost per litre is offset with the increase in MPG.

Any benefit of 98+ RON is only felt after ten tanks and as a point of note, I can't tell a difference between Tesco 99 and V-Power, but I can feel a difference to standard 95 RON fuels.
Most filler caps have 98 with a (95) in brackets.
