Mk V, 05 plate, Engine idle problem !

Hi everyone,

I have owned my MK V for several months now, I have noticed when you first start up the car it seems to chug a little when you are at low revs in first or second gear. Also once it has been running a while, and idles the engine doesnt seem to tick over as it should??

Are these 2 things possibly related?? I was thinking about spark plug / leads??? or the throttle sensor for the chugginess !! maybe it only cause the car is cold

PCV valve dodgy??, normally causes poor idle speed, Smell of fumes inside the cabin, and lumpy starting.

The throttle body may be full of carbon/dirt, you can try removing it and giving it a clean out. And see how it goes from there. If you lift the engine cover you will see it at the back right hand corner, there should only be 4 screws holding it down to intake manifold. Failing that, send me your chassis number through and I'll put it into else on the works vag machine and I'll check tpi's (common reported faults)

Thank you, could you tell me a little bit more about the PCV valve ?? what is it, where is it etc ! thanks......

Its under the airbox, basically its a rubber diaphragm which helps keep the crankcase pressurized. If it splits, especially if your car is remapped, its known to split and vent via a tiny hole in the PCV housing into the engine bay, you would smell it in the cabin if it was leaking. I had to change mine with this very issue. I noticed a tiny hissing sound AFTER the ignition was shut off under the airbox. PCV was £29 from VW dealer.

thanks mate appreciate that. I've been on plenty of forums before that don't help out much so I know what it's like to be stuck with something. I might aswell put some experience towards helping others out. I've got access to elsa at work so if anyone needs anything like radio codes or tpi's(common reported problems) checked, send me your chassis through and I'll see what I can do

remove your oil filler cap and sniff inside... thats the smell.
