help - engine sounding really rough

What kind of sensor?

could be any sensor or even coilpack. Low voltage means the unit is failing. You need a code to pin point what is failing.

have you tried swapping the coilpacks around and listening closely to see if you notice which is maybe not firing?

Not yet I'll have to dig my Haynes manual out first. I called a local motor factor and asked how much a coil pack would be and they said £64 plus VAT. Might have to risk getting a second hand one on ebay...

Does the non-turbo 1.8 take the same coilpacks as the turbo?

Try your local VW dealer, they should be chaeaper than that....
