Loud On Start ??

Hi ive got a 1.8t AUM 2002 and every time i start it, it idles quite high (1300rpm or so) for about 45 seconds to a minute or so and then drops to about 950rpm. It only does this from cold but it does it every time i had a fiesta before this and it only done that when it was really cold outside like winter time not in the summer. Is this normal or not ? And if not is there a way to rectify this ?

its meant to do it, it has an air pump and secondry air intake, its basically there just to help the car start when outside temp is low

Think its to warm the CAT up. prior to moving off.

Yes it is it helps prolong the life of the CAT by passing extra air through it on startup, also has something to do with reducing emissions (obviously linked to the CAT) on startup - VW are incapable of designing something purely to make a component last longer

Does it make a "Whoosh" sound when it cuts out? if so, need to replace the rivets in the pump, easy job, loads of info around.

nope it just slowly drops down the revs with no other noise just getting quieter. so no changing of the rivets hopefully
