Fuel pump running constantly.
« on: 20 May 2010, 23:01 »
This does not seem normal im sure the fuel pump should cut out when sufficient pressure is reached.the fuel pump relay gets really hot.Help please
Could it be a blocked fuel filter although the car runs ok.also its a b!tch to start when hot is this related?

My car is an X reg 16 gti which is bog standad.

How do i post a picture ?

Should run continuously once the engine has started, just runs for a short time when you switch on the ignition to prime the system.
It's a constant pressure system with any excess fuel being relieved back to the tank.
If the fuel pump relay is getting very hot then it may be on its way out or the current draw is too high. You can check the current draw of the pump, Haynes manual gives you some figures to work with. Excessive current draw could be blocked filter (go for that first) or impending pump failure.

There's a good few threads about probs with fuel pump relays, so do a search for "fuel relay" and it will also help to sandpaper the relay connections as I bet they'll be full of melted fuse box. In the end I had a new fuse box and a new relay. If you don't look to sort it out sooner rather than later it will start to melt your fuse box if it hasn't already.
......now officially dubless.

Pump is defo supposed to run all the time and if the relay is getting hot there maybe a slight short somewhere in your wiring.. does the car have an immobiliser? If so, is the wiring for it ok as it will most likely be wired to the fuel pump wires at the back of the fuse box.

This may be all wrong as im a complete dick with computers.
But thanks for the replys 1st im going to fit a new filter, and a friend from work seams to think problem with relay is due to it getting wet my car leaks a bit when it rains although it dosent get wet very often as it lives in the garage he also thinks he may have one at home so i shall see what happens but thanks to everybody who replied.

grrrrr not another leaky one.  ive had 3 mk1s and they all gave me the water blues.  good you can garage it.  my current mk1 has a rust bubble under the rubber of the windscreen and used to leak on the fusebox!!.. seems this may be the cause of your issue then...
