its pointless spending money having the flywheel balanced up f everything that either bolts to it or it bolts to isnt balanced up aswell.

thats a bit daft,  every thing is balanced.  better balanced the rotating parts of an engine are the more efficent and longer lived it'll be.   unbalanced flywhell will just strain the crank and main shells as it trys to wobbel

my flywheel is lightend,  idel affected no, drivablity affected no.   made the car a bit nippyer.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

sorry may have not made myself clear. I know the pparts will already be balanced. but everything will be balanced to suit old set up. I ment get the other parts balanced up to match the new lightened/balanced flywheel.

Well im going to go ahead with it, can get it lightened free and balanced for 30quid, and for half a tank of fuel its worth a go. Ill let you know results if anyones interested

Maybe it wont all be balanced together but surely putting a normal g60 on without lightening, it wouldnt be balanced to crank etc either?

Difference is mine would be lighter and not balanced to the crank/case whereas normal g60 installation would be heavier, not balanced aswell etc?

I have ABF one which weighs 10.5kg think heavier than g60 one anyway as heard thats 9.5kg? Going to take it down to 8kg. Any idea what yours weighs in at danny_p?

Contrary to popular belief it's certainly not necessary, or even always helpful, to balance a flywheel on the crankshaft it's going to be used on except perhaps for extraordinarily high revving and delicate race engines. Unless the flywheel is tightly dowelled to the crank it's going to sit in a slightly different place every time it's fitted anyway. There will always be a small amount of play between the crank spigot the flywheel sits on to centralise it and also between the flywheel bolts and their holes in the flywheel. Now we're only talking a thou or so of possible movement but that's enough to make it pointless trying to achieve any better level of accuracy than by balancing the flywheel on a proper mandrel in its central hole. At least you then know the flywheel itself is in perfect balance and it will run very close to that on any crank it's then fitted to. That's certainly the way all production flywheels are balanced anyway.
