just found this http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/FLYWHEEL.htm

Seems convincing

But will you notice the amount you are going to do it? I doubt it.

Dont forget the G60 is already loads lighter than the DM one.

Less than 800g

like i said earlier...

Ok so question to you lot that have g60/VR6 combo.

Have any of you had your flywheels lightened, and if so, by how much?

Did you have it taken of inside/outside/all of the rim at the back, heard different things.

Thanks

i wouldnt mind knowing this tbh, before my lot goes in...i have heard that if you lighten it too much it starts rattling? the flywheel is only 800g less than the dual mass setup (as weighed by patch)

I run a std G60 flywheel,i use my car on a daily bases, not sure anyone could justify lightening a flywheel unless they do track days etc.... Is the SMF conversion worth doing? If you can get the parts cheap enough or your clutch is on it's way out then yes,if not leave it alone and spend your money elsewhere.

Do you know anyone thats had it lightened patch? If so, how did it affect their acceleration?

Just reading a thread on uk-iv's and you mentioned lightening a fair bit, if your 'patch' on there that is

The lighter the flywheel the better VS Weight needed for keeping engine momentum

I don't know where the perfect balance is.

As said previously, a lightened flywheel will spin up quicker, particularly noticable when revving and stationary. This then feeds its benefits into when you accelerate as the engine has less rotating mass to shift in order to gain revs which in turn gives you speed. The downside is if you lighten too much then you get reduced momentum so you will tend to lose more revs when changing gear. As with most mods they usually need coupling with other mods to make them effective - so if you fit a quickshift kit then you may gain back what your losing when changing gear but you'll be back where you started before lighteneing.

I have never run a lightened flywheel on my golf but my old mini had one in and these were my observations, of course it will be more noticable and obvious what effect things are having in a car such as a mini (older, simpler, lighter etc) but just thought it was worthwhile mentioning it. TBH i don't think its worth it for the golf - changing form a DM setup to the G60 is good enough IMO

you also need to look at more to get the full benefits, if you lighten the flywheel then you need to get it balanced and in turn have the clutch housing balanced to match and then the crank etc.

On my old car when i rebuilt the bottom end i had all the bottom end lightened and balanced. ou wont get the full benefits just by doing one part

+1 - go nuts and get everything lightened and balanced, won't be cheap mind  :lipsrsealed:

its pointless spending money having the flywheel balanced up f everything that either bolts to it or it bolts to isnt balanced up aswell.
