They did it to the Polo twice as well. MKII - MKIII and MKIV - MKV.

Don't worry, it isn't going to happen. First of all, these Auto Express pictures are nothing more than the product of a gifted photoshopper with an over-active imagination. Secondly, before any new Golf comes, Audi urgently needs to launch a new A3. This isn't due until the end of next year and Audi will want this well and truly established before the next Golf makes an appearance, especially after the Golf Mk VI has all but killed sales of the current A3. Thirdly, sales of the Golf Mk VI are going so well, that it won't be replaced before MY 2013 with the GTI following a year later. That means GTI Mk VII arrives September 2013, at the earliest.

Golf R - almost on order - 5-door, DSG, Rising Blue, leather, 19" alloys, RNS510 with Dynaudio, ACC, Sunroof, Parking camera and sensors, luxury pack and cruise control.

Keep dreaming. VW facelifts rarely last longer than 3 years. The 6N2 Polo only lasted 2 years. Expect MKVII Golfs late 2011 - early 2012 with the GTI hitting the streets mid 2012.

Pretty sure the new A3 lands this year.

As others have observed, the Golf 6 is a bit of an anomaly. There has been some debate about whether it was face-lift or a new model. Although based heavily on the Mk 5, Volkswagen fundamentally re-engineered the car to make it easier and less expensive to build. It might be better to call it the Golf Mk 5.5. That said, with so many sheet metal changes, that investment has to pay-off, so we should expect a 4 year replacement cycle, not the usual 3, as if it was just a regular mid-life facelift.

I don't know where you get your information about a new GTI by 2012, Horney, but with all due respect, I think you are being somewhat over-optimistic. I have no access to inside information on this, but i do read the German car mag, Auto Motor und Sport. One of their lead writers, Georg Kacher, also writes for the UK's Car Magazine. He says late 2012 (MY2013) for the new Golf and 2013 for the new GTI (MY 2014). I found him to be very reliable over the last 20 years.

The 3-door A3 coupe will debut either late this year or early 2011. The 5-door A3 Sportback will debut a year later. A new Golf usually follows 12 months after a new Audi A3. However, given that sales of the current A3 are so uninspiring, the launch date may well be brought forward. Since Audi is launching an RS3 version of the current A3, this will be allowed to sell for at least 6 months before a new A3 model comes along to replace it.

no point getting one's knickers in a twist - new GTI will be out 2012/2013 - which is 3-4 years after this one, a car gets boring after having it that long, so it'll be time to get the new version - simples!  and with any luckk it will be better and quicker so happy days!

Got to say - will have to be something special to upgrade to a Mk7 so quickly as we love the Mk6 and it ticks all the boxes.
At first we were unsure re moving from Mk5 to Mk6 as we thought seems a bit of a rip off etc, but all the little changes add up and some of the new toys I spec'd such as the rear view cam \ RCD510 etc combined with the lovely new interior. That was what sold it for me. Oroginally we were going for a M3 or 335i saloon or a new E class - but when took out the mk6 and experianced the new interior and toys - was a case of where do I sign.

Hate the current A3 \S3 it's so dull to sit in and look at - very bland vs the mk6 gti.
However..... if the new A3 is as nice as the current GTI AND they bring out an RS3 with more power than the R and expect 0-60 in sub 5 seconds please! - then would upgrade to the RS3 as long as it's not a silly price such as same as an M3 4 door saloon!
