Both me and my dad (he used to be a VW/Audi mechanic), think it's the coolant temp sensor. What do you guys think, spalsh out £36 on a new one from VW? Need to sort out immediately the blocked hose he said as well, so I'll probs get the bits off ebay to make what Paul said.

You just need to sort out the correct sizes.

Paul, 32mm is the diameter of the hose? Also, is that union the right size for the small coolant hose?

As far as I can tell the inside diameter of the large pipe is 32mm, and the small pipe is 7 or 8mm.

Looking at your video of the idle it definately looks like your coolant temp sensor is fecked. It is going from open to closed loop which is dumping fuel into the engine because it thinks its cold. My daughters car did exactly the same until they finaly diagnosed the coolant temp sensor.

My abf fan kicks in at 90 and keeps cutting in and out to keep the temp at 90. I still think you must have air in the system around your fan switch. Hopefully the new top hose will sort it.

I've come to the conclusion its the temp sensor. I'll be ordering a new one from VW tomorrow.

Fan has kicked in, finally! Although It's kicked in at 100 on the water gauge now, oil temp was 98. I think the coolant temp sensor is over reading, as when the temp was 90 on he water, the oil was 72 (this was after leaving the car to col down for about an hour). I think the fan is kicking in at the right time (gauge stuck at 90) but because the sensor is reading wrong it's showing 100 (give or take 5).

With the sensor unplugged, would the idle still fluctuate? I unplugged it, gave the connector a clean with WD40 and started it up (unplugged) and it fluctuated the same).

I'll buy the stuff you showed me on eBay Paul, to get that pipe unblocked (coolant system must be pretty restrained if it's not flowing through the water bottle). And tomorrow I'll order a new VW sensor. Hopefully on the road for good again now!

Yes, Idle was fine then. I am in the hunt for a sensor loom from another ABF to replace the current one as it is pretty brittle and as Danny can confirm, Roger Bodger was let loose on the electrical system, so it could do with a better replacement.

But yes I do suspect the coolant temp sensor now and as I said, I'll be ordering a new one tomorrow.

Oh by the way RJ, now I remember....The coolant temp sensor has 1 pin....Just a single flat (copper?) part where a single spade connector plugs in to.
