This is what is inside the pipe.

Ignore the broken bit off of the flange. The flange is the "bung" you can see. I've just cut this out of my spare one because it was completely blocked. No way I could unblock it whilst inside the rad pipe. It was hard to unblock out of the pipe. It was full of solid black gunk. I am fairly certain that the one on my car is exactly the same so I would imagine that there are a lot more blocked ones out there.
The one on my car isn't causing me any problems at the moment apart from the problems I had bleeding the system a couple of years ago.
I will change it after next Fridays trackday though.
The hole in this pipe is about 3mm dia and on this one is blocked where there is a depression to allow for the angle of the flange.

So it's impossible to unblock the pipe then while it's in the top rad hose? That means that the only way would be to buy a new pipe with an unblocked thin hose?

I tried with a straightened out coat hanger but it wasn't up to the job on my spare one. It may be easier on yours, the blockage may be softer because its been in constant contact with the water. Plus if you dislodge the blocge where is it going to go - you dont want it blocking anything else like a water way in the head.
Just ordered a new one from VW and they're £45.

mine is the same, had to destroy it to get that plastic bit out. crazy they would put that piece in with only a 3mm hole there, mine was liek yours blocked and no way to unblock it without destroying the hose in the process :(

Better leave it in place then as I don't want to be trying to unblock something that won't unblock while in 1 piece.
If VW did it then there's a reason for it I assume.

Yes because everything is made to a price. Probably the cheapest way to make the item. In their eyes it has only really got to last past the warranty period.

Don't get me started on what I think of the VW, their dealers and the parts and aftersales service. I had to order my replacement rad pipe from VW in Bristol due to not being welcome in the Weston Branch. I recently told the parts department manager he was a useless tosser and VW Heritage were a bunch of money grabbing w@nkers who cared nothing for customer service. This was after the third time they had ordered the wrong part and then they refused to refund my money because the part was special order.

I suppose. But maybe by unblocking it it can result in some sort of overheating, or over pressurized system or something. I don't know....Not sure  if I want to risk it!
